INTRODUCTION |
YOUR FIRST EVENTHello, to those of you getting ready for your first event(s), don’t worry. Set out below is a list of things you will need to help you get by, combine this with the people and the event, and you are provided with the opportunity to have a good time. Simple isn’t it ? Firstly I’ll try to explain the difference between the two main types of events. POTLUCK, At a potluck people will mix , talk and circulate. This type of event is usually very informal, (This may lead people to overlook newcomer’s ). If this happens and you’re feeling left out, either join in with the group that looks like its having the most fun, or find the CHATELAINNE or SENESCHAL, and explain how you feel. Don’t worry they’ll understand and perhaps help with introductions, we were all newcomers once. The food at a potluck event is provided from the people attending, each bringing a plate of food sufficient to serve four adults. This food should be selected and served with the medieval theme in mind, the article on cooking and food ( page 4) provides some examples and recipes for the adventurous. However please remember if you can’t bring anything this time that’s okay, come anyway there’s always plenty. Sometimes a TOURNEY or some such will be held at the potluck, if so please try to keep at least 2 meters back from the edge of the List field or mor ecommonly Eric (this is usually marked by bunting), and when COURT is in process please be quiet ( or move away if you really need to speak to someone). At any time if the HERALD is making an announcement, preceeded by Oh Yea ! Oh Yea ! Oh Yea ! nobody else should speak. FEASTS, These are usually more formal than potluck’s, some people tend to sit in established groups, however there are couples and singles who will be more than willing to share a table, you may even be invited to sit with a group, either is normal. There is almost always a COURT at a feast, ![]() people will gather around the BARON and BARONESS, or visiting Royalty and witness the rewarding of good deeds and the bestowing of AWARDS and TITLES. The Baron and Baroness are directly appointed by the KING and QUEEN to rule this group in their name and are therefore shown the same deference. At some stage during the feast there nay be dancing, these are sometimes simple and sometimes not so simple, the simple ones are great fun to try and learn as you go (if you have the confidence so are the others), again join in or seek out the Chatelainne for assistance. Quite often there will be entertainment of some form, please remember there are others who may want to listen, even if you don’t. At the FEAST food will be served to you at table, REMOVES are usually announced and its a good idea to be at your seat when the servers get there, if you don’t want to miss out. The servers are volunteers from the people attending the feast, and you may sometimes hear calls from the kitchen for help, this may be for servers or washer-uppers (this is probably the quickest way to get to know people and make friends, other than staying behind afterwards to help clean up). You may wash up your dishes at the feast, or bring a plastic bag to cart them home and do later. Now you have a an idea of what is going to happen (I hope), I will now lay out a couple of lists that will help you fit in more easily. Before you go out and spend money that could go towards your first garb/armour/pot-luck dish, please be aware that we have loaner gear available, contact the CHATELAINE if you need anything on the list.
