INTRODUCTION |
FROM THE CONSTABLESo it’s your first SCA event ? You’ve gone to all the trouble to acquire ( be it borrowed or made yourself ) your fantastically, stunning new garb, you’ve made it to the event, now what do you do ? The VERY first thing you should do is find the CONSTABLE. What is a constable and how do you find one, I hear you ask. Well, firstly a CONSTABLE is a jack of all trade, involved in everything, In a nutshell we aid the Autocrats of the various events, in anyway possible. Collecting monies, making sure a site is safe and clean enough for our purpose, keeping a register of attendance, collecting lost property etc... As you can see, you have to be a pretty big nut to be a constable. The facet of our job that is most relevant to you is in our most visible role, which is getting everybody to pay their event fee and to sign an indemnity. INDEMNITIES are legally binding documents which everybody attending has to sign ( or the event must be cancelled ), of course you are more than welcome to read the form before you sign. Luckily these only have to be signed where there will be some form of martial activities occurring, you should still see the Constable first even at feasts though, to pay any monies owing and let them know you have arrived. They will be able to answer any questions you have or if not direct you to someone who can. How do find one, at a camping event, they will be the red eyed, fatigued looking people covered in mud. At a feast or potluck, they will be sitting in a corner somewhere, with ten million pieces of paper and a pen. If you still have trouble Identifying them, look for a Blue BANNER with a gold/ yellow mace on it. 
Under which or in close proximity to you will find someone wearing a matching BALDRIC , ( a strip of material running diagonally from shoulder to hip ). This is the CONSTABLE, fabled oracle who will tell you everything you need to know, and will probably convince you to either, A) get them a drink, B) get them something to eat, C) stay and talk to them, D) get them a drink, or E) Become a Constable yourself. Now all you have to do is have a really good time, HAVE FUN !!! and have you ever thought of becoming a Constable ? |
